Academic Coaching & Tutorial Services
Special Education We work with children that have specific learning disabilities or suspected learning disabilities such as: attention deficit behavior disorders, auditory and visual processing delays, working memory deficiencies, reading disorders including comprehension and fluency, written output delays and more. We create customized programs based on current learning theories to strengthen the area(s) of need.
Executive Functioning We guide students toward improved self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses and help them learn how they learn best. This includes but is not limited to: physical organization, working memory support, note taking skills and long range planning (and more). Along the way, we promote self advocacy and support independence.
Written Output Although tutors support basics such as sentence structure, vocabulary development, grammar usage and word choice, written output support often needs to go beyond these basics. The organization of language and prewriting strategies including webbing and use of graphic organizers often accompany the basics. In addition tutors use current writing programs (such as Inspiration software) to model various approaches to written output and provide a guide for a better final product with great structure and tone.
Handwriting Using Handwriting Without Tears, we can support the youngest of learners who are just beginning to write or those who need a bit more support with formation of letters and words.
Reading Fluency We offer services to support and encourage the growth of reading skills including pre-reading skills, phonetics, decoding, fluency and reading rate. Many of our tutors are trained in current reading programs including Wilson, PhonoGraphix, Read Naturally and Reading Recovery.
Reading Comprehension Using programs such as Visualizing and Verbalizing, Mosaic of Thought, Reading with Meaning and others, tutors are able to help students internalize main idea, extract needed information from text and infer meaning. These skills become even more critical when students are required to extract deeper meaning from expository writing, primary sources and complicated textbooks.
Remediation, Reinforcement & Enrichment in Mathematics Tutors are able to encourage your child’s math skills through work in computation, problem solving and analysis of mathematical material. Math is becoming more language based, and our tutors encourage students to go beyond basic math computation to analyze mathematical thinking and apply these ideas to really world situations.
Test Preparation Our tutors can support students in preparing for multiple standardized exams. Individualized sessions can be created for ISSE, SSAT, SAT and other standardized tests needed for admission processes.
Home Schooling Support Often those who are home schooled need a bit more support. Our tutors can provide general or subject specific coaching for those students who work outside the mainstream classroom.
Organizational and Study Skills Studying is a broad concept that many students are unable to grasp. It often needs to be made concrete with specific ideas to support working memory, organization and retention of concepts. Our coaches meet with students to develop homework plans, study strategies, long-term project support and ideas to build knowledge and confidence in testing situations.
College Essay Preparation
Finding your voice and expressing your ideas is challenging especially when you are going through the college application process. Our tutors are here to assist students in pre-organization, working through topics, finding the correct tone and editing these important documents.
